Berlin

The theme train to Berlin will be rather experimental; together, we’ll explore the layers of the urban landscape, the phenomenon of the “new wild” and, above all, the sound. The latter will become the central point of the theme ride and the program in Berlin. The site-specific installation for this location was created by sculptor Dagmar Šubrtová in cooperation with the sound designer Peter Cusack. The program will also feature a soundwalks and side events in the Czech Center Berlin. Is there a better city to share the good practice? That’s why we will also include a guided tour to revitalized parks, and panel discussion on vague terrain and on possible ways of artistic interpretation of these parks. The festival train will return to Prague on Sunday, October 23. Are you ready for new experiences in urban landscape? Book your ticket now.

Dagmar Šubrtová

Dagmar Šubrtová lives and works in Kladno, Czech Republic. She graduated from the Sculpture Studio of the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague under Kurt Gebauer. She worked at the studio as an assistant until 2013. In addition to her artistic profession, she is also involved in thematic curatorial projects such as Olga Karlíková / Heard Landscapes, UM Gallery (2012), Jitka and Květa Válová /Under One Sky (2021) and others. She has long been monitoring the transformation of the landscape as a result of ongoing industrialization. The central theme of her work is the "no-man's land" devastated by industry and the tailings of underground mines. She does not limit herself to reflection; instead, she aims at sculptural interpretation of the newly emerging places in the “new wilderness”, the physical examples of natural renewal. Since 2015 she has been working on the project Na pomezí samoty / Frontiers of solitude, which explores current issues of landscape transformation and the interconnectedness of post-industrial society and nature. She is the co-author of the several publications and takes care of the estate of Jitka and Květa Válová.

The New Wilderness

Green spaces in the city aren’t limited to well-kept parks, gardens and suburban woodlands. Some of the greenery is located on half-forgotten or unused empty spaces along railway lines, other has gradually covered former brownfields, the “no man’s land” affected by social and economic influences, or spaces left from the era of the Communist expansive urban planning. In addition to abandoned places, this also involves edges of the roads that we maintain as empty transition zones. These zones, rich at biodiversity, follow up on the original environment, and can be astonishing in their natural vitality. Generally well known already, they are sometimes called “the new wilderness”. Its importance in the city is gradually increasing, so we should begin to see it more as an opportunity for mutual interconnected growing, the tissue that connects our cities, a network of outstanding green zones in the middle of the urban space.

Berlin is a great example of urban planning that takes these green areas into account. The East-German experience is important as it has integrated sensitive landscape architecture into the master plans.

Peter Cusack’s sound recordings focus on the research of sound and our perception of specific places. The recordings were taken in the transition zones between Berlin’s train lines, stations and their surroundings, on new islands of natural freedom. The sculptural installations by Dagmar Šubrtová refer to the natural renewal symbols, its damaged but not inanimate fragments, and the network of root systems. The artworks indicate their function – invisible collaboration between microorganisms and their vitality linked to the natural ecosystem.
